Not everything is as it seems...

A bias outlook on what the majority of a society believes and lives by, presented to the public by the media. Ideology, is presented to us in several ways; television, magazines, music lyrics, movie theatre's, the news and so on. The majority of society commonly mistakes these ideologies as facts and reality. An example of this is the image of family. In the world of television the perfect family consists of one mom, one father, a son and a daughter and perhaps a dog. In this situation the ideology is that the people within this family are living the perfect life. The father is still considered the provider of the family, while the mother is portrayed as the care taker of the home. Cooking, cleaning, caring for the children etc, are all the responsibilities of the mother. The children occasionally do not get along. The son of the household is considered to be the annoying brother. The older daughter accepts more of the responsibilities around the house and is desperately annoyed by even the presence of her brother.

In the real world, mothers and fathers both have full time jobs, outside of the home. Brothers and sisters get along. Pets are becoming less common in households due to the fact that there is rarely anyone home to care for it. Families consist of more then one son or daughter or maybe even have only one child, maybe no children at all. But because the majority of us are blinded by what the media leads us to believe, we are rarely happy with our own lives. This is because we continue to compare it to that of television. Although this is only one example of ideology, the message here is that these ideologies shape what we as a society believe to be right. Instead of following our own beliefs, and giving credit to what we our selves have accomplished, we continue to compare it to the lives of others.

S.e.x Sells

Looking at this add for the clothing company Guess what do you see?
What is the message this add is sending out to the public?

When I look at this add I see male dominance. This is because the male in the photo is slightly taller then the female, the colour of the jacket he is wearing give the idea power. If you look even closer it is similar, if not exactly the same color as the camera in the background. This could sugguest that if a female wants to be succesful in the entertainment business she needs to look seductive, and sexy like the one shown here. The woman is dressed in a much lighter outfit which gives the idea that she is helpless or is given less control over her body.

However,This dark colour is also present in the beads across her chest, bathing suite top and in the long necklace that traces down her bare stomach. This sugguests that the only way for her to be successful and reconized is if she uses the characteristice of her body. I also see that this ad could send the message to woman that its okay to give a man what he wants(sex) at the expense of exposing her body and her own happiness. I do not see any personal connection between the male and female in this ad, except a sexual one (for the male). This is because although their bodies are touching and the males hands are placed at the side of the females stomach, the males face is facing inward towards hers, but the females is looking towards the camera showing that they are completley disconnected with one another emotionally, and personally. It basically looks like the male is taking advantage of her the expression on her face does not show any interest in the male at all, as I said before they look completley disconnected.

Guess's message to men in my opinion: Wear our clothing line and seduce women, feel empowered and dominant over women.

Guess's message to woman in my opinion: Show off your body to get what you want in life, use sex to achieve your goals. Forget being intelligent and having respect for your self Guess will make up for everything you are sacrificing.

" The medium is the message"

Cell phones, computers, new papers, television, radio, posters, billboards, movies, magazines, books, mp3's , catalogues. These are just a few ways we are all connected and provided with information that reach a very large group of people. The mass media is a means of communication to a large audience. These few items listed above are ways that people can communicate with one another in seconds. In a previous blog " Can you hear that?... its radio!" I mentioned that, a specific technology was created in the 1920's (the radio). This was not only a revolution for businesses to make deals with one another quickly and more efficiently, but the beginning of many other mass medias to come. Magazines, catalogues, books and newspapers were also apart of this revolution to connect the world.

It was first introduced as a means for businesses to communicate with one another quickly so that deals could be made quicker. Today in the 20th century it has grown to be more than that. Mass communication is now a means of entertainment for the public, an act of enrichment to education, also it is easier to receive information that concerns the public, and of course like in the 1920's an enrichment for businesses themselves in terms of marketing, public relations, propaganda and more noticeably now than ever, with our upcoming election, political communication . Even as early as 1960 philosophers like Marshal McLuhan became fixated on the idea that "the medium is the message". Now more than ever, this quote is true.

We the public have become fixated on media. The idea that we can access numerous amounts of information on various topics boggles our minds and in some cases takes over our daily routines

Can you hear that?... Its Radio!

It is there when you wake up, when you are travelling from place to place even when you are sitting at home reading a book, the radio. Personally I listen to the radio every chance I get, even when I am in the shower I have my stereo turned up to the max, and my aunt can testify to that! Personally, I cannot stand being in a room that is silent, which is why I always turn to my radio to bring a sense that there is a presence in the room besides me. I can laugh at what the broadcaster(s) are saying, sing along to the trendy music they play and even learn a thing or two about what is going on in the world. It is a huge part of every ones lives. It provides us with news, traffic updates, music, contests and when spending alone time reading, cooking eating etc., it brings a sense of lively hood into the room. It is a convenient form of entertainment that most of the time we do not even realize how much of a role it plays in our daily lives.

But, the purpose it was meant to serve, is not what it has developed to be now. Its stations were radiotelegraphy systems that did not carry sound. They were meant to transmit letters in Morse code. It was a means of commuting information quicker than sending a carrier to deliver the message, which may not have got to its destination until several weeks, or months later. It wasn't until Christmas Eve 1906 that the first (recorded) audio transmission was made, this was the starting point for advertisements, music and other ads to be broad casted by 1920. Today in the 20th century it has escalated from being used to quickly confirm business deals, to bringing people the news, traffic reports, weather, the latest music and advertisements for the trendy places to hang out like clubs.

Yes, it still continues to deliver messages quickly but the messages have changed from an easy way for businesses to communicate with one another, to these stations gaining the attention of the mass public convincing us that these radio stations are the best station to listen to...and of course, making a huge profit off of us. But hey, at the end of the day am I going to turn my radio on while I'm in the shower, OF COURSE! Its not a hard hobby to live out all I have to do is push a button turn up the volume dial and walk away, each step my life becoming more and more influenced by media.

Setting up my blog

Hi there!

I am very excited that I have finaly set up my very own blog. I found that using blogger.com it was very easy to set up an account and get started. Like many other bloggers have said, the most difficult part of this blogging process was coming up with a blog name. After about an hour, of asking my boyfriend, searching the Internet, and reading other blogs, I came across this quote. "We live in a rainbow of chaos". I think that this quote is absolutely true.

Like a rainbow has many different rays of light entering a single rain drop to create each individual color we see. The world has many diverse cultures that make the world as beautiful as it is. In contrast to this quote a rainbow has a very organized pattern that is always constant. The world that we know and live in today is not always constant it is always changing. Although our political authorities attempt to prevent chaos in the world sometimes is creates even more chaos than before.

So, after thinking about what this quote means to me, and a few more steps here is my blog! As a new Blogger I hope everyone enjoys reading all of my posts to come as I look forward to reading all of the comments that come from my readers.
